Playing WatchMUD

WatchMUD is a game made entirely of text. You read where you are, you type what you do, and other people are in the same world with you while you play. This page gets you from a Windows PC with nothing installed to standing in the town square in about ten minutes.

What you're getting into

A MUD ("multi-user dungeon") is the ancestor of every online roleplaying game. There are no graphics. The game describes a place, and you answer by typing short commands like look, north or get knife. The world is split into rooms, and you walk between them by compass direction. Creatures in the world are called mobs, and some of them fight back.

You connect with a small program called a MUD client. People in 1990 used bare telnet. You don't have to: the client below is free, friendly, and runs on Windows.

Step 1Install Mudlet

  1. Go to mudlet.org/download and download the Windows version.
  2. Run the file you downloaded. The installer is signed, so Windows should let it through. If a blue "Windows protected your PC" box appears anyway, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. When it finishes, Mudlet opens on its connection window: a list of games on the left, and some fields on the right.

You don't need telnet, ssh, a terminal, or anything else. Mudlet is the whole kit.

Step 2Add WatchMUD to Mudlet

WatchMUD isn't in Mudlet's built-in list of games, so you add it yourself, once.

  1. In the connection window, click New.
  2. Fill in the three fields below.
  3. Tick the Secure box. This encrypts your connection, including your password. Without it, nothing will happen when you connect.
  4. Leave the character name and password fields on Mudlet's Options tab empty for now. You'll make your character in the next step.
  5. Click Connect.

Type exactly this

Profile name WatchMUD
Server address watchmud.com
Port 4443
Secure ☑ ticked

Next time, WatchMUD is in the list on the left: click it, then Connect.

Step 3Make your character

The game greets you and asks one question. Everything you type goes in the input line at the bottom of Mudlet's window; press Enter to send it.

  1. "By what name do you wish to be known?" Type the name you want. Names are 3 to 16 letters, A to Z only: no spaces, numbers or punctuation.
  2. "No one by the name of … Create them? (yn)" Type y. If it asks for a password instead, someone already has that name: disconnect, connect again, and pick another.
  3. "Which lineage?" Pick a number from the list (Human, Hill Dwarf, Wood Elf, Stout Halfling and so on). It only decides how your character is described. It gives no bonuses, so choose whatever you like the sound of.
  4. "Choose a password:" At least 8 characters, then type it again to confirm. The game may hide what you type here; that's on purpose.

Names are permanent. There's no renaming and no deleting, so don't make a throwaway "test" character with a name you'd want later.

Next time you connect, type your name, then your password, and you're back wherever you left off.

Step 4Your first ten minutes

You start in Temple Square, in the town of Wrathrock. Here's roughly what you'll see, with what you type in grey:

Temple Square
The main square of the town. People come and go. East is a
donation room, south is the marketplace.
[ Exits: North, East, South ]
<100/100hp> south
Market Square
The center of town, where people come to trade. To the east is
the general store, and to the west the smithy.
[ Exits: North, East, South, West ]
<100/100hp> south
…a few rooms later, out in the Hollowfields…
The Millpond
 …
An angry goose lowers its neck and hisses at you.
<100/100hp> consider goose
Angry goose looks like a fair fight. (power 1; you are 2)
<100/100hp> kill goose
Ok.
You hit angry goose for 3 damage.
Angry goose hits you for 2 damage.
<98/100hp>

The line in angle brackets is your prompt: your health, now and at most. It turns yellow, then red, as you get hurt.

A good first outing:

  1. Type help to see every command. You can't break anything by experimenting.
  2. Type equipment. You start with a little gear already on.
  3. Walk south through the market and out the south gate, down the trail to the Hollowfields, the farmland where beginners hunt.
  4. Before fighting anything, consider it. "A fair fight" or easier is fine. "Would probably kill you" means exactly that.
  5. After a kill, get all from corpse to loot it.
  6. When you're hurt, stop and wait. Health comes back on its own when you aren't fighting.
  7. Type recall to go straight back to Temple Square from anywhere, as long as you aren't in a fight.
  8. Type quit when you're done. The game saves you.

Commands worth knowing

You can always type help for this list in the game. Most commands have a short form; n is north, i is inventory.

Things that surprise people

Your gear decides what you are.
There are no classes. Heavy armor makes you a Tank; trade it for a censer and you're a Healer before the next prompt. Type role to see the reasoning.
Dying isn't the end.
You wake up in Temple Square with 1 health, keeping everything you carried. Your gear takes some wear, though, and broken gear stops protecting you until the smith mends it.
Some characters are programs.
Anyone marked [bot] in who is a bot that hunts and gives its loot to the donation room, east of Temple Square. They step aside when you arrive, and they can't chat. Type help bots for more.
Text keeps arriving while you type.
The world doesn't wait for you, so a fight or someone's shout can scroll past mid-sentence. Keep typing; Mudlet keeps your half-written line safe.
Sitting idle logs you out.
After 30 minutes with nothing typed, the game saves you and disconnects. Connect again and you're right where you were.

If it doesn't work

Nothing happens when I click Connect, or I get gibberish.
Check that Secure is ticked and the port is 4443. Mudlet won't let you change these while a connection is open: click Disconnect on the toolbar first, then edit the profile.
"Too many connections from your address."
Each household can have five connections at once. Close an extra Mudlet window, or wait a minute and try again.
"Unknown request."
The game didn't recognise the command. Check the spelling, or type help.
I forgot my password.
There's no reset button yet. Ask the person who sent you this page.
